Dear Chairman Scott and Ranking Member Warren:
The undersigned national associations represent 1.5 million real estate professionals and tens of thousands of for-profit and non-profit owners, operators, mortgage originators and servicers, developers, lenders, and property managers involved in the sale and provision of rental housing and single-family homes, both affordable and conventional, along with the technology suppliers that are driving innovation and helping assist in addressing our long-term housing challenges. We write to express our strong support for the nomination of Andrew Hughes for Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
We believe that Mr. Hughes is exceptionally well-qualified to help Secretary Turner lead HUD. Mr. Hughes has over a decade of experience in and around Federal housing issues. His years of work at HUD, where he rose to Chief of Staff to former HUD Secretary Carson and which occurred during the creation of the Opportunity Zones program and while navigating stresses placed on the housing system during the COVID pandemic, make him especially well-prepared for an agency facing an affordable housing crisis that can only be addressed by innovation and change.
For all of these reasons, we urge the Senate Banking Committee to move swiftly to confirm Andrew Hughes as HUD Deputy Secretary. We look forward to working with him to advance policies that support long-term solutions to our nation’s housing needs.
Sincerely,
