Lessons Learned from the Surfside Condo Collapse
There are some very important lessons taken from the Surfside Condo collapse for builders and property managers of commercial and residential properties. Join the engineering and property management communities for an exciting webinar with one of the nation’s premiere engineering experts, Dr. Abi Aghayere, who has been featured on CNN and, in The New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Accompanying him is his colleague at Drexel University’s Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department, Dr. Ivan Bartoli, author of more than 200 publications and a specialist in Nondestructive Testing and Structural Health Monitoring.
Hear from these experts and ask questions on how your organization can reduce the likelihood of having a similar destructive event that, like Surfside, could have been prevented.
In this webinar, you will learn:
- About the Surfside Condo structure and the likely failure hypotheses, and preventive measures you can take at your property.
- How the investigative team proposed to determine the root cause(s) of the Surfside Condo collapse.
- Some anticipated changes to building codes and laws that could result from the Surfside Condo collapse.
- State-of-the-art Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods for condition assessment of structures.

Dr. Abi Aghayere is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering
(“CAEE”) at Drexel University. He holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from the University of Lagos, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Alberta, respectively. Dr. Aghayere is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario, Canada.
He is experienced in structural design (concrete, steel, masonry, and wood), in addition to structural failure analysis and retrofitting of existing structures. Dr. Aghayere is an author of several textbooks on structural design and analysis of buildings including, “Structural Steel Design” (2nd and 3rd editions), “Reinforced Concrete Design” (9th edition) and “Structural Wood Design” (2nd edition).
Dr. Aghayere has been cited as a structural failure analysis expert on CNN, CTV News (Canada) and Voice of America. He has been featured in numerous articles from the Miami Herald, The New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.
Dr. Ivan Bartoli, Associate Professor/Civil Engineering Program Head, Drexel University
Dr. Ivan Bartoli is Associate Professor in the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE)
Department at Drexel University. He received M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Structural Engineering from the University of California San Diego, in 2005 and 2007; a “Laurea” in Civil Engineering (with honors) and a Ph.D. in Mechanics from the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Bologna in 2001 and 2005, respectively.
Dr. Bartoli has been on the faculty of the CAEE Department since 2010, where he began his research work in civil infrastructure assessment. He is a member of the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Bartoli is currently conducting and supervising research on Structural Health Monitoring, Nondestructive Testing, and theoretical topics related to the condition and resilience of infrastructures. He is an author of more than 200 publications including journal articles, conference proceedings and technical documents, including Frontiers in the Built Environment, International Journal of Fracture, Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring, and Journal of Infrastructure Systems and Structural Control and Health Monitoring.
