Smart lockswhich offer access to an apartment unit via a smartphone or smart credentialare growing in popularity, but some wonder if they are as secure as traditional key locks. Have we traded convenience for safety?
In a post on Multifamily Insiders, Ann Matheis with security company Allegion offers five reasons smart locks are superior to key locks.
1. No more picked locks. Smart locks dont have the internal mechanism that makes picking possible with traditional locks.
2. Easy replacement. If a resident loses his or her smartphone or smart credential, a staff member can simply issue a new credential without having to have someone change the door lock mechanism.
3. Track who enters. Need to let an outside contractor in? No problem. A temporary smart credential can give a contractor access for a time window and then deactivate.
4. Better withstand brute force. Smart locks that are Grade 2 ANSI/BHMA-certified can withstand kicking and abuse from sledgehammers and crowbars.
5. Deadbolt addition possible. For residents who want additional security when in their homes, some smart locks can integrate a deadbolt lock.
