At some point in your social media life, you might have learned some hashtag dos and don’ts. Do those guidelines still hold? A new analysis by marketing analytics company TrackMaven, which reviewed more than 65,000 posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, might provide some clarity.
According to the analysis, hashtags of the following quantity and length prompted the most engagement on the three social media platforms:
• On Twitter, one hashtag of 18 characters is optimal.
• On hashtag-heavy Instagram, nine hashtags of 21 to 24 characters drive the most engagement.
• On Facebook, which isn’t as hashtag-oriented as the others, one hashtag per post is ideal; character length isn’t a huge factor, though six-character hashtags had the most interaction.
