Greystar continues to lead the way as the largest apartment manager in the U.S. The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) released its NMHC 50 earlier this month to highlight the largest apartment owners, managers, builders, developers and syndicators.
The Charleston, S.C.-based real estate company is the largest manager with nearly 800,000 units. Asset Living jumped from third to second, reaching more than 291,000 units. RPM Living improved from sixth to third at more than 226,000 units.
Greystar is now also the largest apartment owner in the country with more than 108,000 units, just ahead of MAA with nearly 101,000 units. Morgan Properties stayed in third with roughly 93,000 units, while Nuveen moved from seventh to fourth with nearly 85,000 units.
The NMHC 50 accounts for roughly 10% of the market share of U.S. apartments, and the top 50 managers oversee about 20% of the country's units under management.
Greystar overtook Alliance Residential as the largest developer as well with more than 9,100 units. Alliance slipped to sixth with 4,600 units. Mill Creek Residential was in second with just north of 8,000 units.
