How Popular Are Home-Sharing Sites?

While Airbnb might be valued on paper at a higher price than any hotel chain, the number of people who rent out their homes on the site is still very small.

Only 1 percent of Americans earned money in the past year from listing their homes on a home-sharing site, according to new data from the Pew Research Center. Previous data from Pew found that 11 percent of Americans have booked a stay at a residence using a home-sharing site.

In addition, research from the JPMorgan Chase Institute found that the number of Americans using sites related to the sharing economy, which include home or spare-room rental sites, has decreased compared with last year.
