NAAPAC Update: Steaming Into Summer!

NAAPAC is making incredible progress towards its ambitious $1.2 million fundraising goal, having already raised over $590,000 as of June 3, 2024. This is an impressive increase of $145,000 compared to this point in 2023. We are thrilled with the progress we have made so far and are determined to continue pushing forward to reach our goal.

Suppliers have played a pivotal role in our success, contributing an impressive $321,000, approximately 63% of the National Suppliers Council's 2024 fundraising target of $510,000. We are immensely grateful to all our suppliers for their unwavering support and commitment to our industry efforts.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the following individuals who have already donated or pledged at the Platinum level. Their dedication and generosity are truly inspiring, and they are part of a growing list of devoted supporters who have gone above and beyond in support of NAAPAC's mission.

Huge Growth in Advocate Follow-Up

As NAA’s Advocacy program has grown, so have the metrics used to measure progress. Many affiliate staff will remember when the main goal was the number of meetings scheduled for the Hill. Then we began to look at how many meetings had feedback reports. This year, we have taken it one step further: How many Hill meetings have resulted in follow-up from affiliate members to those Congressional offices weeks after Advocate? We have seen tremendous growth in the follow-up our members have done – nearly 325% growth in follow-up! No doubt that increase played a big part in the Yes In My Backyard Act passing unanimously out of the House Financial Services Committee on May 16!

Housing Affordability Program (HAP) Update: Key Victories in May

The NAA HAP (Housing Affordability Program) was highly active in May, which coincided with legislative sessions around the country. Highlights include:

  • A victory in the Connecticut legislature after the successful campaign with Connecticut Apartment Association. SB 143 threatened to eliminate Lapse of Time and erase the end date of all lease. After successful outreach the bill was not taken up for a vote and quietly died.

  • In Illinois, the state legislature’s spring session adjourned on May 29 with no rent control bills having advanced. HAP resources helped the Chicagoland Apartment Association’s coalition: The SHAPE (Support Housing Affordability, Progress and Equality) Illinois campaign-ensure that rent control legislation never made it to the floor.

  • The Apartment & Office Building Association (AOBA) launched their HAP campaign in early May, targeted at fighting rent control in Prince Georges County. The campaign is a joint investment funded both by NAA’s HAP program and AOBA members.

  • HAP projects continue in Massachusetts, as the legislature discusses a possible transfer tax, and in Michigan, where the legislature is considering rent control.

NAA Meets with the Nation's Mayors

May offered NAA the opportunity to meet with mayors from across the country on both sides of the aisle and proved that housing is an issue that transcends party lines.

  • On May 9-11, NAA joined the Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) “Champions of Democracy Summit” in Washington, D.C. According to the latest research from DMA/Change Research on perceptions of rental housing, the public does not see the connection between supply and demand and does not see lack of housing production as a major driver of cost. This data made a compelling case for the work being done by NAA and affiliates across the country to educate the public and elected officials about the true cost of short supply.

  • On May 15-17, Republican mayors and local elected officials gathered in Colorado as members of the Community Leaders of America for their Spring National Conference. NAA had an opportunity to sit on the panel, “Housing Challenges and Solutions,” where they tackled issues such as false narratives surrounding housing and reviewed policies, solutions and best steps to address the housing challenges facing communities.
