External Affairs: August HAPpenings

  • The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles (AAGLA) is currently engaged in a campaign to fight multiple proposed ordinances in the City of Burbank. These proposed new measures include rent control, increased relocation fees and anti-harassment and anti-retaliation ordinances containing significant penalties. While the proposed measures are making their way through the Burbank City Council process, a campaign of digital and traditional media is reaching a targeted list of voters and City Councilors in Burbank. The outreach is a cooperative effort between NAA and AAGLA with $50,000 funded by HAP and $25,000 funded by the affiliate.
  • The Apartment Association of Orange County California (AAOC) has applied for a HAP grant to support a collaborative effort in Southern California. The city of Santa Ana will hold a Rent Control Ballot Initiative in the November 2024 election. Any HAP funds granted to AAOC would be combined with the funds contributed from other grant and fundraising asks to coalition partners and AAOC members. The overall campaign is anticipated to top $1M with a $50,000 request to HAP.
  • The Delaware Apartment Association (DAA) is prepping a HAP application to address a rent control bill for the 2025 legislative session. DAA is planning to proactively apply for HAP funds to build a strong campaign in support of housing providers.

HAP applications are accepted on a rolling basis dependent on the availability of funding. The updated application and information can be found at https://housingaffordabilityprogram.secure-platform.com:443/a.

Grassroots: Get Your Best Advocates the Recognition They Deserve

NAA’s Advocate of the Year Award is named after Malcolm N. Bennett, who said: “If you don't get involved in issues that affect you, then you have no right to complain."

You know who your best advocates are. Whatever advocacy task you ask of them, they show up.

Ask: Can you make a call? Response: “Sure.”

Ask: Can you fly to Washington for “Advocate?” Response: “I registered weeks ago.”

Ask: Did you follow up with that Member you met with last month? Answer: “Didn’t you see the follow-up email I sent the week after that meeting? I copied you on it.”

The Advocate of the Year Award recognizes that advocates like that are worth their weight in platinum. Recognize your platinum advocates this year.
