NAA's Legal Counsel
John McDermott has served as NAA’s General Counsel for more than 20 years. He has represented NAA as its outside counsel while a partner at various law firms, and most recently as a client of John J. McDermott PLLC.
As general counsel, John reviews NAA’s contractual agreements, and advises the NAA staff on a variety of recurring legal issues ranging from NAA governance procedures to employment issues. In addition, he participates in meetings of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.
In consultation with the Government Affairs Department and the staff of the National Multi Housing Council, John has represented NAA/NMHC in a number of lawsuits with significance to rental housing . These efforts are usually cases before various federal and state appellate courts. Past cases have included issues like rent control, treatment of utilities, inspections of rental units, municipal fees for rental housing and other cases of interest to NAA/NMHC.
