NAA's Bob Pinnegar reviews eco-friendly trends in the rental housing industry in a recent Washington Post column.

National Apartment Association President & CEO Bob Pinnegar reviewed different sustainability trends at apartment communities in a recent column for the Washington Post: “How apartments are embracing eco-friendly trends.”

Start with what is already available, i.e., using nonresidential buildings for rental housing, such as hotels, malls and office buildings. “Using existing infrastructure also allows for less waste and lower carbon usage than what comes with sourcing new materials and construction, in addition to monetary and time savings,” says Pinnegar.

Smart technology was another item residents can benefit from at apartment homes. Some eco-friendly options Pinnegar mentions are LED lightbulbs and energy-efficient appliances. “Such innovations allow residents to enjoy the convenience of automation while saving on energy costs and living sustainably.”

Eco-friendly amenities are a value-add for residents. This includes sustainable trash and recycling, electric vehicle charging stations, community gardens and more. “Embracing eco-friendly practices not only encourages current residents to be more environmentally conscious — it also highlights to prospective residents the apartment community’s emphasis on sustainability,” Pinnegar says.
