The South and Sun Belt continue to see an influx of migration. The recently released U-Haul Growth Index for 2023 shows Texas topped the list for the third consecutive year. Florida (second for the third straight year), North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee rounded out the top five states with the most one-way movement.
"While one-way transactions in 2023 remained below the record-breaking levels we witnessed immediately following the pandemic, we continued to see many of the same geographical trends from U-Haul customers moving between states," said John "J.T." Taylor, President of U-Haul International, in a release.
Texas has led the way six times in eight years and was second the other two years. Florida has been a top-four growth state for nine straight years, atop the list in 2019.
Washington jumped from 23rd in 2022 to seventh in the 2023 growth states list. Virginia slipped from fifth to 10th, and Vermont moved to 12th from 30th. California had the most residents moving away for the fourth straight year.
