Chicago-based Core Spaces has partnered with two organizations to help prevent suicide and support mental health.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and according to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide the second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 10 and 34. Chicago-based educational developer, owner and operator Core Spaces announced a partnership with the CHRISCROSS Foundation and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to bring awareness to mental health, well-being and stress.
The programming and initiatives include AFSP training Core Spaces staff to identify individuals facing a crisis as well as how to respond. AFSP will provide educational opportunities and resources. AFSP will integrate its culture and mission at Core Spaces onsite communities to promote healthy lifestyles during watershed events like move-in, testing periods and other potential moments that can lead to stress and suicidal thoughts and drug use along with other detriments to positive mental health.
“A partnership with an organization with a network like Core Spaces allows us to bring critical educational and awareness initiatives directly to college-age students who may be going through mental health challenges — and it will help save lives,” said Courtney Collins, ASFP Regional Director for the Greater Chicago Area, in a release.
The partnership with the CHRISCROSS Foundation, founded by Richard Lasek, Experiential Director with Core Spaces, will help promote AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Campus and Community Walks. Lasek lost his brother to suicide and says nothing prepares someone when this happens.
“You don’t learn about these experiences in school, and there is no playbook on how to handle it, said Lasek in the release. “In honor of my brother, CHRISCROSS Foundation was founded to assist those struggling to help a family member, a friend, or themselves overcome these obstacles. Through the foundation’s partnership with Core Spaces and AFSP, I’m proud that we are building intentional communities centered around wellness, while making sure that those who need support, receive it.”
Meredith Henning, AFSP’s Senior Manager for the Out of the Darkness Walks said, “This partnership is unique because AFSP usually coordinates with universities on a one-on-one basis, whereas our partnership with Core Spaces allows us to bring educational programming everywhere where AFSP and the company crossover — which is 160 college markets.”
