Before You Test: Important Things to Note

  • The Candidate Handbook includes detailed instructions on how the exams run and important information regarding the rules and regulations of testing administration.
  • Eligibility codes unlock the exams. Once you receive your code from your local apartment association, please be sure to keep your Eligibility Code with you when you are ready to schedule the exam. Eligibility Codes are unique to each student and are the key to unlocking your access to the scheduling site.
  • Please note: Your NAA User ID is not your eligibility code; you must obtain the code from your local association. Online credential students obtain their codes from NAA.
  • Use these detailed instructions to schedule your exam via Live Online Proctoring (LOP)
  • Use these detailed instructions to schedule your exam at an affiliate testing location.
  • All credential exams are taken in a proctored environment, either on your own computer with a remote proctor or at an affiliate testing site with an in-person proctor.

    • CAM and CAPS -- $100
    • CAS, IROP -- $60
    • CAMT -- $55

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I take the exam on a Mac?
A Mac computer may be used for exams taken via live online proctoring but the candidate must use Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer as a browser.  The exams are not supported on the Safari browser.

Are the questions going to be random?
Yes, all of the questions will be randomized.

Is there a running clock/timer on the screen?
Yes.

How many questions are on each exam and how long are they timed?

CAM:  185 questions; timed for four hours

CAPS:  160 questions; timed for four hours

CAMT: 100 questions; timed for 2 hours and 30 minutes

CAS: 100 questions; timed for 2 hours

NALP: 100 questions; timed for 1 hour 30 minutes

IROP: 65 questions; timed for 1 hour 30 minutes

CAMT + E:  50 questions; timed for 1 hour 30 minutes

CAM + Student Housing:  50 questions; timed for 1 hour 30 minutes

Can students take the test at home?
Candidates may take the test anywhere they have access to an internet connection and access to a computer with a webcam and audio capabilities. Technical assistance is available during normal business hours through CASTLE Worldwide. If you are taking the test during off-business hours or on the weekend and you have technical difficulty, you may have to wait for your inquiry to be answered.

Are proctors required?
All credential exams are proctored. Your local apartment association reserves the right to proctor exams at their testing location. Otherwise, students will take the exam on a personal computer.  

What is the fee for the Candidate Handbook?
The Candidate Handbook can be downloaded for free.

Are there real questions on the practice tests?
There are Skill Checks from each curriculum available as a study guide for students. This material is free of charge and downloadable from the Candidate Resources page but you must be logged in and registered as a candidate with NAA in order to view this page.   The credential practice tests contain real test questions but the questions have not been validated and should not be used as guides to prepare for the exam.  The practice tests are offered to familiarize candidates with the testing environment only.

When will I get my results?
You will get your results immediately after taking the exam. It is important to have valid and up-to-date information so NAAEI can provide you your results. Update your information.

When will my local association be notified that I have passed an exam?
Your local association will receive your score through a report that is sent weekly.

How many times can I take the test?
Candidates may sit for the test as many times as they want until they pass the exam. However, there is a seven-day waiting period between testing times and there is a retake fee for each attempt.

What is the retesting fee?

Fees to retake a failed exam are as follows:

  • CAM and CAPS -- $100
  • CAS, IROP -- $60
  • CAMT -- $55
  • NALP -- $50
  • Micro-credentials -- $50

What if I require special accommodations when taking a credential exam?
Please contact NAAEI at 703-518-6141 for questions and submit a Request for Accommodation Form at least 30 days prior to your test date.
