My RPM Story: RPM Career Ambassador Michell Garcia Brown

RPM Career AmbassadorSix years in the hospitality industry gave me a foundation. Residential property management (RPM) gave me a future.

After spending the better part of a decade managing restaurants and hotels, I was well-versed in overseeing operations and delegating work to my team. I also excelled in (and loved) managing the budget. A colleague told me that a career in RPM would combine my management experience with my interest in finance. When I made the switch, there was no turning back.

That’s why I’m an RPM Careers ambassador, guiding others toward all the opportunities RPM has to offer — just as my colleague did for me. RPM Careers ambassadors are the faces of our industry. On RPMcareers.org, we connect with interested job candidates to help them learn more about joining our industry.

Here’s what I tell them: What makes a successful RPM professional is strong organizational skills, absolute professionalism, and the flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment. Great RPM professionals are leaders who can work under pressure and make sound executive decisions. Working in the restaurant industry allowed me to quickly adapt to this environment, especially with the RPM industry’s shared focus on customer service and customer loyalty.

Now, I’m a community manager for Greystar. I manage a 630-unit apartment community and a team that is committed to delivering excellent customer service while meeting revenue goals. My job includes financial responsibilities, such as paying invoices and analyzing market competition, as well as managing the community. I respond to resident concerns, facilitate service requests, and add curb appeal to make sure the building makes a great first impression.

I love RPM because of my everyday interaction with the residents, the regular positive feedback I receive, and how I enhance the property’s financial performance. I became an RPM Careers ambassador so I could share my love for the industry with others. My experience proves how important it is to have someone guide you to a dream career. I’m just proud that now I get to be that someone!
